What is Osteoarthritis of Knee?

Knee osteoarthritis (knee OA) is the inflammation & wearing away of the cartilage on the bones that form the knee joint. It is the disease caused by degeneration of the knee joint which eventually worsens over time. It affects the entire joint including bone, cartilage, muscles & ligaments. Its progression is influenced by age, bone structure, body mass index (BMI), genetics, muscular strength & activity level. Knee OA can be managed with physical therapy but more severe or advanced cases may require surgery. Physical therapy can help in reducing the pain, swelling, and stiffness of knee osteoarthritis & also improves knee joint function. It helps easy for you to walk, bend, kneel, sit & squat.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis of Knee

With knee OA, the muscles surrounding the knee become very weak, and the knee joints can become stiff. Pain occurs when the cartilage covering the bones of the knee joint wears down. This may become worse with weight-bearing activity such as walking or getting out of bed.

Symptoms of knee OA may include:

  • Stiffness or pain after sitting with the knee bent or straight for a prolonged period of time
  • Worsening pain during or following activity, particularly with walking, climbing, or descending stairs, or moving from a sitting to standing position
  • Swelling
  • A feeling of cracking, popping or grinding when moving the knee
  • Tenderness to touch along the knee joint

Generally these symptoms do not occur suddenly or all at once, but gradually over time. If you have had worsening knee pain for some time that is not responding to rest or a change in activity, it is best to seek the advice of a medical provider.
