Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Lateral epicondylitis or Tennis Elbow is a painful condition that happens when tendons in our elbow are overloaded, generally by repetitive motions of the arm and wrist. Despite its name, players aren’t the only people who develop tennis elbow. Person whose routine work feature the types of motions that can lead to tennis elbow include plumbers, painters, butchers and carpenters.It can pop up in people of different age groups, but it’s most common around age of 40.

Causes

As the name itself suggests, playing tennis especially frequent use of the backhand stroke with poor technique is one major cause of tennis elbow. However, many other common arm motions might cause tennis elbow, including:

  • Dong plumbing jobs
  • Painting
  • Driving screws
  • Cutting meat
  • Long working hours with computer mouse

Symptoms

The symptoms of tennis elbow develop slowly. Usually, the pain begins as mild and gradually worsens over weeks and months. Usually no specific injury is associated with the start of symptoms.Common signs and symptoms of tennis elbow include:

  • Pain on the outer part of your elbow
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain while lifting something
