achilles-tendinitis-2

Achilles tendinitis

Achilles Tendinitis commonly refers to an injury of the Achilles tendon or its covering. It is an overuse injury that is common in middle-aged people who are jumpers & joggers, due to the repetitive action & increased intensity and so can occur in other activities that requires the same repetitive action. It’s an injury on the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone.

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It can endure great force, but it is still susceptible to injury. Untreated, the tendon can become torn or ruptured. In mild cases, treatment may involve resting or changing an exercise routine, but more severe cases may need surgery.

Symptoms

  • Pain, stiffness in lower leg, & loss of strength in the affected area.
  • Pain is greater when running fast, for a longer time or when climbing stairs.
  • Tenderness and stiffness during the night & especially in the morning, which usually improves with mild activity.
  • The area may be tender, red, warm, or swollen a few cm above where it meets the heel bone in case of inflammation..
  • The Achilles tendon creaks when touched or moved

Causes

  • Ill-fitted or poorly supportive footwear when running or exercising
  • Not warming up properly before exercise
  • Tight hamstring (back of thigh) and calf muscles
  • Increasing intensity of exercise too quickly, for example, running speed or distance covered
  • Toe walking
  • Hill running or stair climbing to an exercise routine
  • High foot arch with tight Achilles tendon
  • Running on hard or uneven surfaces
  • The calf muscle is injured or has little flexibility, putting more strain on the Achilles tendon
  • Poor eccentric strength
  • Sudden intense physical activity such as sprinting for the finish line
  • Over-training
