De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

De Quervain's tenosynovitis

Overview

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful condition of tendons in your wrist and lower thumb. Swelling of the tendons, and the tendon sheath, can cause pain and tenderness along the thumb side of the wrist. When the swollen tendons rub against the narrow tunnel they pass through, it causes pain at the base of your thumb & into the lower arm.

Although the exact cause of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis isn’t known, any activity that relies on repetitive hand or wrist movement — such as working in the garden, playing golf or racket sports, or lifting your baby — can make it worse.

Symptoms

  • Pain near the base of your thumb, directly over the two tendons.
  • Pain is felt in the wrist and can travel up the forearm.
  • Swelling & pain near the base of your thumb.
  • Swelling & pain on the side of your wrist.
  • Swelling may be seen over the thumb side of the wrist. This swelling may accompany a fluid-filled cyst in this region.
  • A “sticking” or “snapping” sensation in your thumb when moving it.
  • Difficulty moving your thumb and wrist when you’re doing something that involves grasping or pinching, squeezing, or wringing.

Causes

  • Direct injury to your wrist or tendon; scar tissue can restrict movement of the tendons Gaming
  • Hobbies like gardening or racket sports
  • Arthritic diseases that affect the whole body like rheumatoid arthritis
  • Repetitive workplace tasks
  • Overuse
