Foraminal stenosis

Foraminal stenosis

Foraminal stenosis is one of the three forms of spinal stenosis. The disc, which cushion between the spine bones, can bulge, causing the foramen to narrow, this neural foraminal narrowing is called  foraminal stenosis that cause the nerves to get pinched.

Some of the conditions from a pinched nerve include:

  • Severe back pain
  • Weakness in the arms and legs
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Muscle tightness

Causes of foraminal stenosis

Injury to the spinal joints will result in progressive degeneration disc disease, herniated discs or arthritis of the joints. Arthritis of the facet joints & degenerative disc disease  cause foraminal stenosis in affected areas of the spine by causing bone spurs narrowing the space at the nerve roots.

Symptoms of foraminal stenosis

There are a number of different symptoms you experience, it all depends on how compressed the nerves are and how narrow the foramen has become, as well as in what area of your back the condition is manifesting. When it is a foramen in the neck that is affected, one might experience symptoms in the arms, fingers, shoulder & neck. When the condition is in the lumbar region of the spine, one might experience symptoms in the thighs, knee, buttocks, feet, toes, and back. These symptoms can include:

  • Trouble standing
  • Pain that is either sharp or dull
  • Weakness in our legs and arms
  • Difficulty walking in a straight line
  • Burning or a “pins and needles” sensation

Physical therapy at SOS PHYSIO rehab

Physical therapy helps build muscle strength, improve range of motion, and maintain flexibility & stability of the spine. With regular physical therapy exercises, space may open in the spine for the nerve roots to pass. Losing weight can also take pressure off of your spine and nerve roots.

There are many physical therapy treatments such as manual therapy & active release techniques (art) are found to be very effective in treating this type of disorder.
