Is it a hamstring strain or referred pain (from the back or hip) in the back of the thigh?

If unsure kindly consult one our experienced physios for an expert clinical assessment. For physical therapy guidelines in examining hamstring strains a more specific estimation of severity might be observed in hamstring strains assessment of severity & grading of hamstring strains.

The following guidelines are the result from many years of successfully treating hundreds of elite athletes-

How many weeks until it is safe to return to play after a hamstring strain?

A previous strain in the prior one year or so almost always dictates that 3 weeks of rehabilitation is strictly required before it is “safer to return to play”.

An inability to walk at normal speed on level ground within few hours almost always means that a 21 Days period of training is required before it is “safer to return to play”.

A combination of both above mentioned parameters strengthens the requirement of 21 Days of rehab interval.

What are the risk indicators for potential recurrence for a hamstring strain?

Previous hamstring injury is basic predictor of recurrence. In addition to that, taking anti-inflammatory medicines and having a painful active knee extension stretch (test of greater than 10 degrees) are factors which are also associated with being at a risk of recurrence of the hamstring strain.

Does the rehabilitation influence the risk of recurrence in hamstring strains?

Training consisting of running drills and specific hamstring strengthening should be engaged on every alternate day, particularly in players who are at risk of re-injury. Players should stretch twice or thrice a day and engage in three full training sessions before returning to field. Not taking NSAID’s in the post-acute period following a hamstring strain may be associated with a greater chance of successful return to competition.

Hamstring injury prevention

Every full speed running or acceleration sport participant should engage in full speed running and acceleration during the pre-season period & in addition to that, perform 2 sessions of hamstring strengthening, including 1 eccentric emphasis hamstring exercise, as part of preseason training.
