Sciatica

Sciatica generally happens in middle-aged & older people. Sciatica is related to tingling, pain burning, numbness, or weakness along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve begins from nerve roots in the spinal cord in the low back and extends through the hips and down the legs. Sciatica refers to the symptoms caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve.

Sciatic nerve pain is most commonly a result of a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease. Usually sciatic nerve pain often goes away by itself in four to eight weeks, but in some cases may require physical therapy treatment.

Causes

  • Spondylolisthesis (slipping of one vertebra onto another)
  • Herniated or slipped discs
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Bone spurs
  • Disc degeneration, due to arthritis or other spinal conditions
  • Tumors
  • Pregnancy
  • Age

Symptoms

  • Pain ranges from mild and achy, to sharp and burning, to severe.
  • Symptoms usually occur only on one side of the body.
  • Leg numbness and tingling which may extend to your foot.
  • Certain activities can worsen the symptoms, such as walking, sitting for a long time, bending at the waist, all these positions are painful and irritating.
  • Severe sciatic nerve pain can lead to difficulty walking.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control in severe cases, excess pressure put on the sciatic nerve may lead to irreversible damage to these functions.
