Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is a physical condition in where the connective tissues near the shoulder joint gets thickens and tightens which results in an ever-increasing amount of pain in the area and ultimately reduces your arm’s range of motion. Lack of use causes the shoulder capsule to thicken and becomes tight, making the shoulder even more difficult to move & gets frozen in its position.
Signs and symptoms of frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder have 3 stages-
Frozen shoulder takes several months to fully develop with the shoulder joint. In the freezing stage, the shoulder becomes stiff and is painful to move. The pain slowly becomes more severe as time goes on, and the individual starts losing their fine range of motion. This stage lasts 6 weeks to 9 months.
In the frozen stage, some of the pain has usually subsided, but the severe stiffness in the shoulder joint remains which makes it more difficult to perform daily tasks and activities and even some tasks may prove impossible to complete on your own. This stage lasts 2 to 6 months.
In the thawing stage, the individual works through the period of severe stiffness, their shoulder eventually starts to heal. Also in some cases, the shoulder can slowly return to normal functioning after several months. Full recovery can even take up to a couple years. The stage lasts 6 months to 2 years.
However, many people find that physical therapy is one of the best methods for regaining their lost strength and motion.
