Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Overview

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a condition of the foot caused by repeated pressure that results in damage on the posterior tibial nerve. The tibial nerve branches off of the sciatic nerve which runs down the back of the thigh & is found near your ankle.

The tibial nerve runs through the tarsal tunnel, which is a narrow passageway inside your ankle that is bound by bone and soft tissue. It also passes underneath a dense piece of connective tissue which can be a source of compression when it becomes too tight.

What causes tarsal tunnel syndrome?

  • flat feet, as the outward tilting of the heel that occurs with fallen arches can produce strain & can stretch the tibial nerve
  • varicose veins in the membrane surrounding the tibial nerve, which cause compression on the nerve
  • injury such as ankle sprain or trauma such as fracture —may produce inflammation and swelling
  • lesions and masses like tumors or lipomas near the tibial nerve
  • diseases such as diabetes or arthritis, which makes the nerve more vulnerable to compression
  • inflammation from arthritis

What are the Symptoms of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

  • sharp, shooting pain
  • pins and needles
  • an electric shock
