Torn Meniscus

A torn meniscus is one of the most frequently occurring cartilage injuries of the knee which can be painful and debilitating. Each of your knees has two C-shaped pieces of cartilage that cushion & stabilizes the joint which protects the bones from wear and tear. Any activity that causes you to sudden twist or rotate your knee, can lead to a torn meniscus. A torn meniscus causes pain, swelling & stiffness. More than 40% of people of age 65 or older have them.

Symptoms

  • A popping sensation during the injury
  • Catching or locking of the knee joint
  • Swelling or stiffness
  • Tendency of knee to get stuck or lock up
  • Unable to fully extend or bend the knee joint
  • Pain in twisting or rotating your knee
  • Feeling of your knee giving way
  • Limping

Causes

  • Sports injuries
  • Athletes are in increased risk, especially those that play contact sports & dancers also.
  • Activities which cause the knee to forcefully bend or twist or rotate, such as aggressive pivoting or sudden stops & turns.
  • Deep squatting, kneeling, or lifting something heavy can sometimes lead to a torn meniscus.
  • Previous knee injury is also at higher risk that happens simultaneously due to the trauma that caused the other injury.
  • Older adults naturally have an increased risk of knee injuries including a torn meniscus due to age-related knee changes and degeneration.
