Broken arm

What is a broken arm?

A broken bone is a fracture of the arm which involves one or more of the three bones of the arm that have been cracked.  The arm consists of 3 major bones — the ulna, radius and humerus. If one has broken an arm, he/she should seek prompt medical attention. It is necessary to treat a fracture as soon as possible for proper healing. A simple break can be treated with a sling, ice and rest. However, the bone may require realignment. A more complicated break may require surgery to realign the broken bone and to implant plates, wires, nails or screws to keep the bone in place during healing.

A snap or cracking sound might be the first indication of broken arm. Symptoms includes-

  • Bruising
  • Severe pain, worsen pain when moving the arm
  • Swelling
  • Deformity compared to the other arm
  • Difficult to move
  • Inability to move the limb, which may indicate nerve damage
  • Numb or tingly

Almost all injuries to the arm that result in a broken bone are caused in 2 ways: falls and direct trauma.

  • Falls- Falling on your outstretched hand or elbow
  • Sports injuries- Direct blows and injuries on the field or court
  • Significant trauma- Arm bones can break during a car accident, bike accident or other direct trauma or any accident that causes the direct application of force to a part of the arm
  • Child abuse- In children, a broken arm might be the result of child abuse.
