Spinal
stenosis causes narrowing in your spine. It is when the spaces between the
bones of spinal cord get narrow. Narrowing of bone puts pressure on the nerves
that run from your spine to your arms and legs that causes pain. It occurs most
often in your lower back or neck. It generally occurs in people older than 50.
Although, young people with a spine injury or a narrow spinal canal are also at
risk of getting spinal stenosis. Diseases such as scoliosis & arthritis can
also cause spinal stenosis too.
Types of
spinal stenosis
- Cervical stenosis- It is when the narrowing occurs in the
part of the spine in your neck. - Lumbar stenosis- It is when the narrowing occurs in the
part of the spine in your lower back.
Symptoms
-Lumbar

- Numbness or tingling in a foot or leg
- Back pain
- Pain or cramping in one or both legs when you stand for
long periods of time or when you walk, which usually eases when you bend
forward or sit - Weakness in a foot or leg
–Cervical spinal stenosis
- Numbness or tingling in a hand, arm, foot or leg
- Problems with walking and balance
- In severe cases, bowel or bladder dysfunction (urinary
urgency and incontinence) - Weakness in a hand, arm, foot or leg
- Neck pain
Causes
- Spinal injuries
- Overgrowth of bone
- Thickened ligaments
- Herniated disks
- Tumors
